Storytelling Sessions

I offer Storytelling Sessions that combine an insight into the importance of oral tradition and traditional stories, with history and Highland folklore. We will talk about the important role of the shanachies (in Gaelic seanchaidh – pronounced [ˈʃɛn̪ˠɛxɪ]), the bearers of old lore and about some stories that travelled around the world in the 18th century and started bringing tourists into the Highlands. You will hear about the Cailleach, who is older than time itself and dive into legends of witches and Fenian warriors, stories of fairies, waterhorses and other fantastic beings. There is no end to the beautiful storytelling tradition of the Highlands.

What kind of stories and themes can I expect in these Storytelling Sessions?

I do research for every of my storytelling sessions and usually prepare a variety of regional stories, as I believe that these provide a great opportunity to connect better with the landscapes we are surrounded by and to get to know the places you visit on a different level. These include some supernatural elements and some historical accounts and will give you a great insight into all the different traditional characters of our storytelling tradition.

However, if you have any particular interests, please let me know before our session and I will do my best to research the stories and themes you are interested in as best I can.

Some themes I can prepare are: Witches and witchcraft, Fairies, Strong women of the Highlands, Fenian Warriors and Ossian, Clan Macpherson.

Please just reach out with anything you have in mind.

Where do you offer Storytelling Sessions?

I usually cover the area of Badenoch and also travel to the areas of Glencoe, Fort William and Inverness.

In these areas, I have done Storytelling Sessions in different locations, from cosy pubs with a fireplace, to tipis, storytelling trees and rented venues. I love the idea of being outdoors during a Storytelling Session, but if you opt for that, you will need to be prepared for our variable Highland weather.

How long are the Storytelling Sessions?

You can book Storytelling Sessions for any amount of time, but typically I would recommend 1-1.5 hours for adult groups. For children, I would recommend slightly shorter sessions, or plan for breaks.

What does a Storytelling Session cost?

£100.00/h plus expenses.

How can I book a Storytelling Session?

I think it is important to agree on timings, topics and venue together, so please just get in touch for more information or to book.

Why is Folklore so important?

Folklore often serves as a repository of ecological knowledge and sustainable practices. Traditional stories about land use, seasonal rhythms, and conservation techniques reveal ancient wisdom that can inform contemporary environmental stewardship efforts. Learning from these narratives encourages a deeper appreciation of the Highland landscape’s ecological diversity and the interconnectedness between culture and nature
