Forgotten Memories – Reading the landscape

Duration: 4-5 hours

Start time: Upon agreement. This walk can be booked any time of the day to best fit into your travel-plans. If you are unsure, whether you would like to catch the sunrise or sunset, walk through the day or the night, a quick view at this chart on daylight hours in Scotland, may give you a better idea and I will also be here to help, just get in touch.

Meeting location: Usually Dalwhinnie, Newtonmore, Kingussie, Kincraig or Aviemore, more details will be provided upon booking, once your very personal tour is ready. This will also depend on your mobility and whether you are planning on using public transport or a private vehicle.

Acessibility Information: We will be walking for 4-5 hours and usually cover approximately 10-15 km with breaks. The ascent throughout the walk can vary and be as much as 700 m, if you wish to go high up and enjoy the views from the peaks, but we can just as well settle for less ascent or even mostly flat walks. This is entirely up to you and can be planned according to your wishes and fitness level without any issues.

If you are unsure, how to best determine what kind of walk you would like, we can just have a little chat about your past experience, regular activities and I can send you a couple of sample routes that will help us to find the perfect one for our tour. Please be aware that you will always need sturdy footing and footwear.

At an average fitness level, these walks would take less than the indicated time, however, I always plan with some extra time, as we will be taking breaks to chat, take photos, share stories and have some snacks.

In case of severe weather conditions, I reserve the right to change the route of the walk.

What to bring: Please bring waterproof clothing, as well as sturdy shoes, and be aware that sections of the path can be rather boggy. I also recommend some additional layers, as the weather in the Highlands can change very quickly and be unpredictable at times. For more information on how to prepare and what to bring, please also read the provided packing lists.

There will be ample opportunity for taking pictures, therefore, please also bring a protective cover for your camera, if needed.

Pictures from some example ‘Forgotten Memories’ Walks

Creag Dubh from Newtonmore

Well earned views for a visitor from London, after an at times rough and often steep ascent, through crags, boulders and past deep bracken and heather. Above the villages of Newtonmore and Laggan, we traced the paths of the last Jacobite chief to leave the country, who his out in a cave just below the summit.

Monadliath Mountains and Raitts Cave

On route to Raitts Cave or An Uaimh Mhor on Belleville estate. Do you believe it was used as a cool store for surplus food? Was it built by members of the MacNiven clan to hide from the MacPhersons? Or would you like to know what the cave has to do with the disappearing cattle?

Càrn an Fhreiceadain from Kingussie

A stony track upwards, for the first Corbett this couple climbed during their visit, to find out if the devil really resides in Kingussie, or it was just the Wold of Badenoch, who invited the devil to a game of chess.

For different walks, you can choose the shorter ‘Tales of Other Times’ Walk (2.5-3.5 hours), or the longer ‘Home in the Highlands’ Walk (8-10 hours). Alternatively, if just one day out in the Highlands is not enough, you can also opt for several days of hillwalking wih either an included wildcamping experience, or accommodation with third parties within Badenoch. Just get in touch to discuss.
